PulmoJet®: A Simple and Effective Dry Powder Inhaler

Improving Inhaler Technique for Better Disease Control

Correct inhaler use is essential for effective drug delivery but serious errors are common with current inhaler products, which may lead to poor disease control (Lavorini & Corbetta, 2008; Molimard, et al., 2003; Melani AS, et al., 2011). The respiratory market has increased opportunities for new and innovative products to provide better patient benefits and value (Lavorini & Corbetta, 2008; Thomas, et al, 2009; Lavorini, et al., 2008; Lavorini, 2013; Virchow, et al., 2008).

PulmoJet® is an innovative dry powder inhaler (DPI) designed by Sanofi Generics to address the challenges of inhaler technique and improve disease control. With its unique features and ease of use, PulmoJet® offers patients and physicians confidence in correct dosing and effective drug delivery.

Unlike traditional inhalers, PulmoJet® incorporates dose feedback mechanisms to ensure accurate medication administration. Its simple design allows for reliable and effective drug delivery, making it suitable for patients of all ages. With just three simple steps - open, inhale, and close - PulmoJet® simplifies the inhalation process.

One of the key strengths of PulmoJet® is its audio and visual confirmation on correct dosing. This feature provides patients with immediate feedback, ensuring that they receive the correct dose every time. The device also includes a dose indicator to track the remaining doses, further enhancing patient adherence and control.

The construction of PulmoJet® involves the use of stainless steel, silicon, polypropylene, thermoplastic elastomer, and other materials. The breathe actuator protects and releases the loaded dose, while the de-aggregator ensures that the medication particles are the ideal size for inhalation. The medication is stored in a protected powder reservoir, and a spring maintains the pressure to keep the formulation in position.

With dimensions of 29.5 mm x 29.5 mm x 99 mm, PulmoJet® is compact and portable, allowing patients to carry it with ease wherever they go.

A Sanofi-led HI-TEC (Handling Inhalers – Technique Error Comparison) study compared the use and handling errors of PulmoJet® with commonly used DPIs in asthma and COPD patients. The study showed a significant reduction in serious handling errors with PulmoJet®, especially when patients received additional video training (Chrystyn et al., 2016). This research highlights the effectiveness of PulmoJet® in reducing errors and improving treatment adherence.

PulmoJet® addresses the challenges faced by asthma and COPD patients in using DPIs correctly. Up to 54% of patients using their DPIs make serious handling errors, leading to poor disease control and increased costs (Al-Jahdali, et al., 2013). By reducing handling errors, PulmoJet® aims to improve treatment adherence, disease control, and symptom management.

Recognized for its well-designed, practical, and innovative features, PulmoJet® was awarded the Iron A' Design Award in 2016. This prestigious accolade acknowledges the device's integration of industry best practices, competent technical characteristics, and contribution to a better world.
